August NFP steamrolls forecasts: +162k jobs and the dollar reprices the Fed

US job creation came in at +162k in August, almost three times the +56k forecast, with unemployment at 4.1% and wages up +0.3% m/m. The Dollar Index (DXY) jumped to the 99.5 area and the market moved to pricing ~60% odds of a Fed hike at the September 15-16 FOMC.

Desk take The number is already in our analyses: it keeps the headwind on EUR/USD (four closes under the 200-day SMA) and tested the cable — which still held the 1.3500 round. Event filter: no new directional entries within 24h of the FOMC or US CPI.

Yen surge knocks USD/JPY down 2.25% in a day and reactivates intervention talk

Bets on more aggressive BoJ steps (above 25 bp at the September 17-18 meeting) triggered a yen buying stampede: USD/JPY fell from 159.60 to close at 156.01 (-2.25%, the worst day since the July intervention), the yen touched 155.28 intraday and the Ministry of Finance is back to verbal intervention. The sigma20 of the yen crosses spiked to 87-121 pips.

Desk take The intervention floor of our methodology (2.5σ20) now runs from 217 to 302 pips across the yen pairs — no structural anchor pays 1:2 today. USD/JPY, EUR/JPY and GBP/JPY stay on WAIT until volatility compresses or a close resolves the mixed alignment. Do not front-run the BoJ/MoF.

Decision week: the ECB meets Tue-Wed (Sep 9-10) with the euro under pressure

The ECB Governing Council meets with the deposit rate at 2.25% and the euro area still torn between growth concerns and sticky inflation. EUR/USD arrives at the meeting with four consecutive closes under the 200-day SMA (1.1630) — the bear regime intact regardless of how firm the council's tone turns out to be.

Desk take The EUR/USD short ticket (1.1629-1.1657 zone, stop 1.1685, target 1.1534) is valid only through the 08/09 close; inside the ECB 24h window the rule mandates reassessing after the event — no exceptions. In EUR/JPY, two hawkish central banks pull the pair in opposite directions.

Cable shrugs off the strong NFP, reclaims 1.3500 and restores full bull alignment

Sterling closed the week at 1.3530 (+0.24%), buying back the 1.3500 round and pushing the 50-day SMA (1.3448) back above the 200-day (1.3438) — the full bullish reading is restored. The BoE holds at 3.75% on a split 6-3 vote and decides on Sep 17, with UK CPI at 2.9%.

Desk take The cable bought the recovery rumor and did not sell the number — relative resilience versus the euro that the report already captures in the long-on-pullback ticket at 1.3438-1.3448 (stop 1.3390, target 1.3565). No entries inside the US CPI or BoE 24h windows.

AUD/USD breaks the 10/20-day high with a hawkish RBA at its back

AUD/USD printed 0.7204, clearing the prior 10/20-day high (0.7195) — a mechanical breakout under the report's rules. The fundamental engine remains the rate differential: RBA at 4.35% with Australian CPI at 3.5%, banks projecting 4.60% by November (next meeting Sep 29), and WTI near $83 supporting the commodity bloc.

Desk take The old 0.7000-0.7020 ticket was replaced by the post-breakout retest: long at 0.7155 (stop 0.7110, target 0.7257). Watch China's CPI (~Sep 9) — inside the 24h window the trigger stays suspended.

Central bank week sets the tone: ECB, FOMC, BoE and BoJ in eight days

Four monetary policy decisions in the next eight days — ECB (Sep 9-10), FOMC (Sep 15-16), BoE (Sep 17) and BoJ (Sep 17-18) — plus US and China CPI along the way. It is the densest sequence of the quarter for our six pairs, and the axis of the dollar's tug-of-war: a hawkish Fed versus increasingly hawkish ECB, BoE and BoJ.

Desk take The methodology's event filter is in charge: no new directional entries within 24h of each top-tier event; live tickets are conditioned to the 08/09 close or to post-event reassessment. The full week-ahead calendar is in the strip above.
